Going on vacation?

Hot attractions that draw holiday makers looking for an 'experience' to bring home a prize to substantiate a battery of travel yarns. Regularly however the obsessed tiger chaser, fanatically chasing his quarry, remains obdurately blind to the countless other wonders that make up the everyday Indian jungle experience, an awareness that sank its teeth in during our first trip to the Kanha Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh.

Kanha is gorgeous ; a glance of its traditional forest giving way to open meadows and again exploding into thick sal or bamboo, suffices to combat any residual hangover of facing the risks of Indian state transport travel. And queuing for entry to the safari, even the jeeps appear to purr in suppressed expectancy.

"Seen any? " "No, you? " None " was the common desist between jeeps. In the 3 days we were there not a single self-respecting tiger selected to reveal itself, not even so far as the Mukki range on the opposite side of the park. Any rare sightings? Not unless you include the barasinghas ( Kanha is the sole place in the world where you find the hard ground range of this species ). Is your house safe? In the bustle of making preparations to go on holiday we make preparations for many things. But for plenty of us we forget shielding our home while we travel. I have assembled some tips about what to do about the place you'll be leaving behind, your house.

The best protection for your house during your absence is to have a home sitter. Have a neighbour check on your house while you are away turning on lights, radios or Televisions and opening and closing curtains will give your studio the appearance that somebody is home. Plants slowly dying because of lack of water may announce your absence. A barking deer, outline hardly discernable, crouching in a bush.
